Prairie River’s history

Prairie River is a hamlet on the banks of the Prairie River, north of Highway 3 in the Rural Municipality of Porcupine No. 395. The river it is named for flows into the Red Deer River.

The community grew up along a railway line built and first operated by the Canadian Northern Railway, later part of the Canadian National Railway. That line is now inactive. Prairie River was also the junction for the Shaw Logging Railroad, which carried wood to the mills in the area.

The old Prairie River railway station still stands and today houses the Prairie River Museum. Former Saskatchewan Roughriders player Bob Poley is among the people associated with the hamlet.
